I have a degree in Linguistics, but I work as a programmer. Most of my expertise about English is self-taught, plus lots of random trivia I've acquired here and there.
This is my favorite EL&U comment ever:
This isn't really a question about English so much as a question about hugs. Source

Does Wiktionary supply what writers need in an online dictionary? IMHO this should go to english.SE |

What are the ingredients for a good book review? Good answer. I'd add just one more thing: don't stick too closely to a template. The best reviews that I've ever read tend to be very creative in their structure and rhetoric, leading to a much more engaging experience than just marching down a list of bullet points. |

How to refer to character of focus in a story This +10. If you're in a character's POV, it's distracting and unnecessary to tell us that every observation is filtered through their POV. |

Do writers use highlighting to clarify ideas in their work in progress? -1, because I think your comment ignores the fact that the author needs to know much more about his story than the reader does. The outlines, maps, family trees, etc. may be crutches for the author to help them keep track of everything that's going into the WIP, and the purpose of laying them out in this manner is to allow the author to communicate the story cleary, and not require that the reader have access to all of their notes. |

What are tips / techniques to manage the consistency of a plot encompassing several subplots ? Great answer. I'd upvote this 10 times if I could. |

What's your favorite keyboard? I'm voting to close, since "what to buy" questions are just not a good fit for SE sites in general. |

“…and the fire from the stove engulfed him” or “jumped on him” or “covered him” or “devoured him” or what? Might be better for writers.se? |

Submitting a novel for publication: do editors still expect Courier font? @Lauren, do actual published novels really use Times? I was under the vague impression that Times was a common computer font, but disfavored by professional typographers. |

Submitting a novel for publication: do editors still expect Courier font? Single quotes, what? I've never heard of anything like that, especially since in most fonts there is no visible difference between a single quote and an apostrophe. |

“multiple personalities” for character development in writing? This may work for some people, but for me this seems like a chicken-and-egg problem. If I can't get inside my character's head, how am I supposed to write an autobiographical letter from him? |
