I have a degree in Linguistics, but I work as a programmer. Most of my expertise about English is self-taught, plus lots of random trivia I've acquired here and there.
This is my favorite EL&U comment ever:
This isn't really a question about English so much as a question about hugs. Source

First publication rights still available on this? @Steven, you're correct so long as it was just a commercial printer, as seems to be the case. But there are some "printers" that are actually more like self-publishers and which might have encumbered the rights in some way. |

Punctuation-Quote or Quote-Punctuation? This actually belongs on english.se, since it's a mechanical question about punctuation conventions. |

How can I create drama in a story that is mostly political and procedural? I wanted to write my own answer here, but I think you've nailed it. Good job. |

Using a town to symbolize/represent a character within a story (fiction)? I disagree that this is uncommon. Using place to represent a character's mood or relationships is a very common literary technique--not that this means that the OP shouldn't do it! |

Do books have to be written in sequence? "[B]ooks are good because of their characters" -- this is overly broad, and a lot of readers (and a lot of writers) would disagree. |

How Do you Stave Off Boredom While Writing? @Lauren, I'm exactly the same way as you. However, I've known writers who swear that they can't write a story if they do know what's going to happen. For them, the entire process of writing is a matter of discovering the characters and the plot, and if you already know the characters and the plot, then what's the point of writing the story? |
