I have a degree in Linguistics, but I work as a programmer. Most of my expertise about English is self-taught, plus lots of random trivia I've acquired here and there.

This is my favorite EL&U comment ever:

This isn't really a question about English so much as a question about hugs. Source

comment How to overcome the fact that I can't write?
@Jakub: Sure, some people are more talented than others. But talent is just a baseline, with very little predictive ability either way.

comment When to accept an editor's rewrite request?
Note that this question is somewhat hypothetical, since I've already agreed to make the requested changes. But I'd like to see whether the question is considered on-topic, and of course what the community thinks.

I just want to add that I don't think there's anyone that just can't write. Writing is a learned skill, not a magical gift bestowed from on high.

comment Pros and cons of using perspectives?
I also think this is a little too broad. This Q would be better if it were a specific question about a specific voice.

comment How do you vary dialogue within stories?
Along with this, it's a good idea to simply omit dialog tags altogether if it's plain otherwise who's speaking, which is very often.

I actually disagree with the comment on grammar. You need to know grammar anyway, but knowing it won't help you much with avoiding repetitive prose.

comment Do You Use Any Version Controlling Software/Methods As Writers?
Yep, this is exactly like I do. I use unfuddle for my hosting, so that all of my WIPs are saved offsite.

comment For Fantasy Stories, Should You Include a Map At the Beginning of the Book?
Note that, if your book is actually published, the publisher is the one that decides whether they're going to print a map at the beginning of your book. And if they do, they'll hire a professional artist to redo the map for you.

comment Is there a rule of thumb about the number of pages a work of fiction should have?
I don't think there are any contemporary publishers accepting novels at 50K, except possibly for series romance. 70K is generally considered the threshold for a full-length novel.
