I have a degree in Linguistics, but I work as a programmer. Most of my expertise about English is self-taught, plus lots of random trivia I've acquired here and there.

This is my favorite EL&U comment ever:

This isn't really a question about English so much as a question about hugs. Source

comment Do writers use highlighting to clarify ideas in their work in progress?
-1, because I think your comment ignores the fact that the author needs to know much more about his story than the reader does. The outlines, maps, family trees, etc. may be crutches for the author to help them keep track of everything that's going into the WIP, and the purpose of laying them out in this manner is to allow the author to communicate the story cleary, and not require that the reader have access to all of their notes.

Great answer. I'd upvote this 10 times if I could.

I'm voting to close, since "what to buy" questions are just not a good fit for SE sites in general.

Might be better for writers.se?

comment Submitting a novel for publication: do editors still expect Courier font?
@Lauren, do actual published novels really use Times? I was under the vague impression that Times was a common computer font, but disfavored by professional typographers.

Single quotes, what? I've never heard of anything like that, especially since in most fonts there is no visible difference between a single quote and an apostrophe.

comment “multiple personalities” for character development in writing?
This may work for some people, but for me this seems like a chicken-and-egg problem. If I can't get inside my character's head, how am I supposed to write an autobiographical letter from him?

comment Is it worth switching to Dvorak?
I use Dvorak, and what you describe was exactly my experience. And I've gotten very used to just writing in Dvorak on a Qwerty keyboard, though it occasionally freaks my coworkers out.
