Writing about drug induced hallucinations and paranoia Many illegal drugs are not addictive. Many addicts are trying to recover, or have indeed recovered. Many others are sufficiently comfortable with their drug source not to worry about their next fix. Many people will talk honestly if there's no reason not to. |

Can a book be written without an antagonist? It's been too long since I read the Divine Comedy, but there was conflict in "The Great Divorce": inner conflict, inside all the more minor characters as to whether to face the certain pain and unknown consequences of Heaven or to go back to the known comforts of Hell. |

How do I avoid legal repercussions for writing a story based on events in my life? In the US, you can also try to find the local Bar Association, describe your situation, and ask for a referral. |

Preventing genre-savvy second-guessing in murder mysteries @Standback: However, John Dickson Carr's Gideon Fell was perfectly aware that he was in a detective story, as seen in one chapter of "Three Coffins". |

What's a good way to backup your writing? I have a desktop and a laptop computer, so I'm now keeping the main Mercurial repositories on DropBox, and local repositories on my computers. That way, even if I screw up DropBox, I'll have a correct version on one computer or another. |

What's a good way to backup your writing? A version control system can be on another system, and that does count as a backup for some purposes. It doesn't have to be, and somebody who isn't a software geek like me isn't likely to have additional systems to use one for work and one for the repository. |

The “Rules” of Writing @sjohnston: Or write something else later. Some stories are simply too flawed to be worth editing. As long as the writer learns something from them, they're not a waste. |

The “Rules” of Writing This ties in with "show, don't tell". It's far too easy to use adjectives to avoid the sorts of details that can bring a scene to life. sjohnston's second two "don't"s refer to using adjectives ("beautiful" and "nervous") to substitute for concrete details the reader can use to see what's happening. |

What are some examples of modern original plots? What is original about Lord of the Rings is definitely not the plot. The extremely detailed and consistent setting is remarkable, and there are other original things, but the plot elements are generally millenia old, intentionally. |

Do You Use Any Version Controlling Software/Methods As Writers? Bear in mind that, due to how writers.se was formed, it will be heavily biased towards programmers and other software people who want to write at first. |

I have written my first novel and I think it's ready. What next? Some successful authors have gone back and released stuff they wrote before they got published. You can generally tell why it wasn't originally published. |

I have written my first novel and I think it's ready. What next? It is possible to edit forever. While making a book better is generally good, if you actually want to publish you do have to draw a line. |

How do you convince your publisher that your story is good? Got any particular length in mind? Short stories you just send, and they'll make up their own minds. |
