Where would be a good place to start for a 15 yr old who wants to be a writer when she's older? +1 for focus on finishing things. It's extremely important to know that there's a goal in sight when you're writing, and that you can reach it. |

How do I re-interest myself in a plot I am working on? +1 for "You haven't wasted the time you've spent." That's the mantra of any budding writer. |

Does this microfiction provide a slightly surreal sense when describing an ordinary scene? @Ralph I voted to close before the edit, which added the specific question. |

Why zero sales? It would also help if you had a better grasp on the language you're writing in. Perhaps try writing in your native language instead? |

How to refer to character of focus in a story To add to this, remember that reading is done much faster than writing. While you're thinking about every word while you write, "filler" words (like "he" and "she") go largely unnoticed by the reader. |

How to handle foreign military ranks? Elantris by Brandon Sanderson did this fairly well. He made up a whole slew of ranks (gyorn, gragdet, arteth, and others) and you always knew where they ranked just by how they acted to each other. He had some explicit telling at one point but it was unnecessary. |

Examples for books that don't use (traditional) chapters? @muntoo It took me forever, even knowing what H2G2 stood for, to figure out how H2G2 stood for that. What a terrible abbreviation. |

For Fantasy Stories, Should You Include a Map At the Beginning of the Book? @Ethan The Blade Itself was one of the absolute worst pieces of awful writing I've ever had the misfortune of being tricked into buying. Throughout the entire story, nothing happened. There was no plot, no antagonist, no conflict, and only one character who was even half-decent, and he was a rip-off of Tyrion Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire. It was absolute drivel. |

How much leeway can be expected from an editor regarding my preference for nonstandard punctuation? Honestly, so long as you use these kinds of constructions well and don't inundate the reader with them, they are more powerful than they are jarring. I rather like most of your examples, and it's important for a writer to have his own voice. That being said, I'm not a publisher and also have not been published, so I don't know the answer to your question. |

Is this character generator useful? @Aaron You can still make specific open-ended questions instead of vague ones. As it stands, the vagueness of the questions makes me spend a disproportionate amount of time figuring out what to answer and not enough time thinking about the answer itself. |

Tips for expanding my vocabulary? As a side note to this, don't rely on the thesaurus to pick your word. Don't use a word from a thesaurus unless you know that word yourself. You never know what kind of connotation a random word might have, and it could end up ruining your scene if you accidentally pick the wrong one. |
