Does DRM affect copyright or the restrictions on distribution by the author? I feel the need to mention that few if any DRM systems are effective against piracy for any significant length of time, especially with things like books. Always carefully weigh the hassle factor of DRM against whatever gains it really gets you. |

Must one have a book cover designed before to publisher? @Imray - I really don't know if it will help or hurt. I can't imagine a large publisher using it (they'll want to design something to go with whatever marketing plan they come up with). If it were me, I wouldn't mention it until I had a deal, then I'd offer it and not get offended if they were not interested. |

Must one have a book cover designed before to publisher? The golden rule can be summed up thusly: Money flows TOWARD the author! If you aren't self-publishing, then under NO circumstances should you be paying anyone any fees for anything! If you have an agent, they'll take a cut out of your earnings, and of course your publisher will get the lion's share of the money, and they'll get paid first, but you NEVER pay ANYONE directly! |

Self-contained software environment for authoring research papers For general interest, Wikipedia does support downloading dumps of their database. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Database_download. It's about 31 gig uncompressed, but doesn't include images. So not as big as one might think. |

Is publishing to Amazon Kindle-alternative eBook markets worth the time and effort? @Strozykowski - the only really good reason NOT to publish on other platforms is if it's too difficult to convert, or if your contract prevents you. With Nook, etc I don't expect either of those is true. |

How to make easy and fast money selling a short book (which is available for download)? @iajrz - I think it's more that they suddenly see an author they never heard of make a million on a book. What appears to them as an 'overnight' success is actually the result of decades of work, but they don't see any of that. |

What are the advantages and disadvantages of digital rights management for self-published authors? @Standback - my advice is to only bother with DRM if the platform you want to publish on requires it. Otherwise, it's probably not worth the trouble it will cause your paying users. |

What are the advantages and disadvantages of digital rights management for self-published authors? Just remember when going the DRM route - every DRM system can be broken. Just because you DRM your book, do NOT expect that you'll keep the pirates away from it - you'll slow them down a bit, but it only takes one bozo with too much time and some typing skill to make your DRM irrelevant. The best you can do is prevent casual piracy - the hard-core guys are still gonna take your stuff. |
