Warning: make sure you know exactly what an agent does before hiring an agent. some writers don't need one, and many agents are useless (or worse). Please don't just trust me on this, read bestselling authors' advice, like this one: deanwesleysmith.com/?p=720

comment Is there any hope of a fictional short story being published?
Aside: consider using short stories to get your name out there and gain a few fans for when you release a book (a novel or even a new short story collection). Getting your story in front of the most people is more important than the most prestigious or best-paying periodical.

You can also submit to Escape Pod, which will make you a lot more famous (much bigger "customer" base than any magazines) but they do usually run stuff that's already appeared elsewhere (reputable online or print magazine) so those may be your best bet.

comment Podcasts useful for improving writing skills
I enjoyed the episode I tried of this one, though I don't listen regularly because it went on a bit long and didn't seem very structured (seemed like about 20 mins of content stretched out to an hour).

comment When editing for a person, how much can be changed?
Perhaps it's best to tackle this by calling them reviewers, and pointing out that they're not editors.

comment For Fantasy Stories, Should You Include a Map At the Beginning of the Book?
I guess the real question is: can a map ever hurt? As long as it looks "good", I'm going to say no, even if it adds little to the readers understanding of the world/story.

Extra thought on this - consider simplifying indecipherable names! A city called Ku probably sounds just as exotic as one called Kuquatl'ixh

comment What should step one in writing a novel be?
Lets get step zero out of the way: love reading (and do it a lot). That one usually goes without saying, but it's still essential.

comment What are the most appropriate types of degrees (or kinds of schooling) that a would-be successful writer should aim to obtain?
+1 for any degree that isn't writing-related. Do courses and practice and read lots of books for the writing skills; study things that are interesting and make money at university.
