comment What is the average cost of software for DITA authoring?
Yes, I've been using Author-it for several years now. The combination of CMS and authoring tool makes it easy to reuse text. The job of the writer changes a bit: you have to plan for reuse of your content. Once that's done though, creating new documents that reuse existing content becomes quick, easy and far less error-prone than copy&paste. There is some overhead, it's a more complex tool than e.g. Word, so there's a cost/benefit analysis to be done. But when your documents have a reasonable amount of reused content, it's worth the investment.

LaTeX is an output typesetting solution, not a DITA authoring tool.

comment When is a screen shot really useful in training documentation?
Some users prefer visual information, others prefer (and are better at processing) text. @what's experience is not universal.

comment Are headlines about lists superior in print as they are in web content?
I don't have statistics, but I'm more likely to ignore articles on the web and in print if they contain a "list headline". In my experience the article below such a headline is more likely to be clickbait garbage, spread over as many pages as there are list items. List headlines are sure signs of sleazy marketeers being at work.

comment Do empty pages need a number?
Incorrect. Some companies (IBM is one, as I recall) and e.g. the US Army require blank pages to have the "intentionally left blank" legend.
