comment Does this opening somewhat grip the reader?
@SF. I think your two answers are quite complimentary together. Yours gives advice on how best to set the scene first to bring the reader in, ClockeWork then provides information on how to tidy up the parts involving people. Betwen the two you provide info on the two most important parts. People and places!

No! I didn't even realise that the 'someone standing over me' when they know who it is thing annoyed me until now. Now i'm never going to be back to my blissful ignorance! Side note, i really like your revised paragraph

comment How to avoid formulaic fictional structures while still using tried and tested techniques?
Don't go out of your way to do things differently either though, to add to the analogy you don't walk at night and refuse to cross the road on a green light. As previously said, it's good to let your story shape its structure like its own fingerprint

Along the same line as SF. 'Even worst than' I presume you meant worse

It this because you have been burned before or because you are taking every precaution you can to never have it be an issue?

comment Am I providing enough information to keep the reader gripped?
Nothing major but my first thought was change 'container' to 'shell'. Container makes me think that whats inside used to be food, or snacks, shell makes me think it used to house something living that has since vacated. Not sure if anyone would agree to that or if its just my personal preference though

I think this type of question is better suited for meta than the main site. But short answer, always assume that other people can and may use the idea. Honestly i wouldnt even worry about it, a short excerpt tells nothing about what you want to convey or how you will convey it, even if someone extrapolates an idea from it its still likely to be two very different end products, especially when you factor in individual writing styles, choices, editors, target groups ect

comment Is it possible to turn a cliche into something original?
What will be added by keeping the scene in. Will it teach us something important about the characters? Does it explain or perhaps provide the foundation for something that might pop up as a conflict later in the story? i.e father released from prison? Or are you explaining the event just because you want to give us a further insight to characters lives?

comment What to do when you get stuck trying to connect sentences?
Take a break. Spending a solid hour staring at it over and over won't help. Take a break, read a book, alphabetize your fridge. Just do anything else for 10-20 minutes. Whenever i'm stuck on a problem, writing or not, focusing on something else always helps

comment Is it unusual to use product placement within a fictional novel, and what are the legalities around this?
Quick note, the issue is not closed and complete. If you only degrade the product, compare it to their competitors and belittle it, there is every chance they will attempt to seek legal recourse for slandering their name. Claiming they gave you permission to use it but only in a positive light. Word of warning, check the fine print to see just what you can and can't do with their product
