What would sections of a book that are larger than a chapter be called? Section would work, too. |

Is there a rule of thumb about the number of pages a work of fiction should have? 50K is often acceptable for children's novel. |

Why is “It was a dark and stormy night..” not a good opening? I like that novel but had completely forgotten the cliched opening. I do remember the opening scene was every bit worthy of that opening line, however. I seem to recall Terry Pratchett has used this line once or twice. Typically, he has a lot of fun with it, usually long before the end of the first page. |

I'm an editor who generally uses Word to communicate changes with my authors. Is Adobe's InCopy better for this task? Haven't crossed that bridge, yet, I have to admit. I'll have to just see what happens. |

Tips for humor writing PTerry's writing is a good example of humourous writing out of realistic responses. Most humour comes from unexpected responses, but good humour in fiction comes from realistic responses. You alluded to this by saying characters stay true their crazyness. |

How to handle foreign military ranks? Yes, the 'wall of text' option is rarely a good idea. Someone like Neal Stephenson can do it, but I daresay most authors probably could not. |
