My issue with brevity is that I fail to stick to word limits. What I start off as a short story ends up as another world inside my head; so it becomes very difficult to whittle down.

Bloodlines are an extension of the idea of clans, really. Difference lies in the fact that bloodlines allow successive generations to inherit fighting techniques unique to a clan, unless acquired by other 'non-clan' people by underhanded, evil/forbidden means.
