Requesting A Writing Critique, Hopefully More Focused Now we're finally getting somewhere. I stare at the blank screen or page a lot of the time and often don't even know how to start. So I just start. I was always under the impression that you are supposed to give an idea of what the piece is about within the first sentence or two though. Is that wrong? Superfluous words/phrases are something I'm aware of, but how do I learn to spot them? Also, the 2nd sentence of the 2nd paragraph was that "nonsensical" sentence - I took 5 minutes thinking before I came up with that version, and I guess it's still "confusing". Ideas? |

Combatting Excessive Familiarity Of Writing I just completed my last piece of work and just slowed down and did this, and ended up rewording a lot of it. I've seen this advice before, but I guess speed matters a lot too. |

How Do You Genuinely Improve The Quality of Your Writing? As another point of clarity, I am thinking grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, proper word choices (my experiences above got me paranoid anytime I use the words "which" or "that"), organization, clarity of message, and so on. |

How Do You Genuinely Improve The Quality of Your Writing? @tylerharms: I've been told less formally that I lack clarity when I express my thoughts on certain matters. Perhaps this is just a confirmation that it carries into my writing as well? This said, I just want to improve my writing. Consequently, I want to be able to objectively figure out the things I need to work on and weed out the irrelevancies? Clearer? |

How Do You Genuinely Improve The Quality of Your Writing? @spiceyokooko: These instances were 15 years ago, so it's pretty hard to get specific. The reason I ask this is that I've gotten to a point where furthering an interest of mine necessitates writing, and especially improving my writing. I have my ideas, but it's hard for me to tell for sure where genuine improvement is necessary. |
