I'm a freelance software engineer, living and working in Belgium (Antwerp-Brussels area). My expertise is in C++, and in Tcl scripting. I have experience in many other technologies, and consider myself a generalist rather than a specialist. Besides programming, I am also interested in science, music, writing, and playing with my kids.

How to make travel scenes interesting without adding needless plot diversions? I couldn't agree more. Anything unimportant to the story can often simply be skipped entirely. Just insert a blank line! E.g. "Bye now, and bring back some good pictures!" <blank line> "He arrived in Istanbul only two days before the festival." |

How to describe the point-of-view character without using mirrors Great tips, thanks. To completely omit any details on the character's looks might be possible in some fiction genres. It would e.g. be harder in fantasy or scifi, because characters often look very different from the usual. |

How to describe the point-of-view character without using mirrors Thanks for the great tips. The first one is most widely applicable; the second works only for introspective fiction, I guess. It would be harder to pull off in third person writing, for instance. Thanks! |
