Dabbled in family history when I first retired from full-time employment. Now regularly put in 60-hour weeks. Is that obsession?

Delighted to have a new focus for my writing.

comment What format should I use for this project?
You are ignoring the very real possibility that the distribution system will determine the final form of the "manuscript". If I want to write a movie, would you tell me to have it published as a hard-bound book first?

comment Books for children: complexity
@Jay There is no dispute that we can readily distinguish books primarily directed to 7 year olds from those intended for 15 year old readers. That is not the same as agreeing that any given 7 year old will read and enjoy one but not the other. She might enjoy one, both or neither. Your reference to a median 7-year-old does not specify the attribute you are using to order the children -- height perhaps?

comment What paragraph style should I use for an e-book?
A "space" appears between characters in a line, not between lines and certainly not between paragraphs. What many people refer to as a "blank line" between paragraphs is actually padding. You should control this with the style sheet (css file) that determines the presentation of your text from the HTML file. You would specify the indent on the first line of each paragraph in the same place. The thing that you MUST NOT DO is hit the enter key a couple of times. That does not "move the next para down a bit"; it creates an empty paragraph which can upset e-readers.

Minor additions to remove suggestion that this refers to fiction writing.

Have you checked that there are actually two different positions or just one role encompassing the full range of editorial responsibility and you get to choose your own title?

comment HTML Formatting for ebook
The essence of the matter is that to you "it looks fine". To an expert looking into how the effect has been achieved, the underlying code might be bloated, tangled and otherwise just nasty. Does that matter? Well that depends on lots of things ...

comment How to convert handwriting into text
@SF Decent speech to text software allows you to speak the punctuation as you go. It should also include the facility to "correct" any inappropriate choices between homophones; simply watch the screen as you speak and fix errors as they occur.

comment Do empty pages need a number?
Are you asking about the page numbering of the manuscript or of the final publication? Do you mean should the page be assigned a number or should its number be printed on it? The differences are important.
