How to publish public domain books? And @All: yes, before 1923 is in the public domain (for US publications, as noted above). Other countries who (also noted above) have somewhat different copyright protections, so if considering something published outside the US, you need to check what their terms are. For instance, in the UK the rule is author's death date + 70 years. A quick search will reveal flowcharts or similar for most countries. |

How to publish public domain books? Good point. But as the UK is a signatory of the Berne convention (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…) its similar copyright protections do apply in the US, as do all of the countries that signed must be respected by other signatories (though of course not to Shakespeare, which is too far in the past to be protected by their copyright protections either). |

Are music lyrics copyrighted? Of course the court won't take it seriously! I was just using an extreme (and real-life) example of copyright owners trying to scare people away from fair uses by using a C&D. |

Which sort of features are required for a text editor in order to improve efficiency and comfort during writing? In general, and without more specifics to the question, the basic answer has to be that the editor has text handling features that are efficient and matched to the way they work. I use Vim, which I often call a "text processor" because, once learned, it is an incredibly powerful tool for editing that seems to anticipate my needs. Because I use a simple text markup, the features it has for appending/prepending/etc. are critical. But they may not be for you. |

Are music lyrics copyrighted? Sure, but a C&D is meaningless without something to back up the claim. I've dealt with quite a few of them in the past...most often it's a reflex reaction and is ultimately meaningless. It can be another way that copyright holders attempt to exert rights they don't actually have. So it's an action without consequence (assuming that one is legitimately using it fairly). |

Are there any good tablets out there for writing/editing? I not only recommend a netbook (which I use in addition to the iPad with a keyboard case I use generally), but have set mine up so that it is designed for nothing BUT writing...no other apps, it starts up with my editor, etc. |

Using dashes in writing dialogue This is a question that has an answer if you are looking for an approach based on prescriptive grammar. However, as a stylistic issue it's not so clear! |

Text referencing protected, trademarked™ and copyrighted© names, what is the correct procedure? I'm not sure why my answer wasn't good enough, given that it answered both of your questions, but the above information on (c) is correct. (c) Facebook is an entirely different issue than TM or R, the first... the latter two refer to the term Facebook (and the logotype), the former refers to a product that is owned by Facebook. Facebook (tm) is about the logo and logotype; @ Facebook would be about, for example, their documentation, etc. |

How many short stories make a collection I think you're going to have to consider the number of stories as a function of the publisher you find. There's no real average to be had. Publishing your stories individually will hopefully open the doors to publishers willing to print a collection. I'd package up your collection with the stories you feel necessary and then, when you work with the publisher, discuss including more. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but it is such an individualized process. |
