Just make sure than when you have a best seller you change tack by telling them they are wrong, and then flaunting your wealth in their general direction rather than ignoring them.

+1 The opening chapters of Disclosure has a good example. Crichton had to add enough detail so that readers wouldn't immediately dismiss the case as "Right. . . a woman raped a man." as many of the supporting characters did.
