I’m a 39 year old autodidact, and very proud to be. I'm looking for work right now, but that's normal given my proclivity for accepting contracts. I write, I eat, and I enjoy life with all of the gusto I can. I love language and languages. I occasionally slip and use serial commas, and when I do I often leave them as a flag flying in the face of my enemy, Language Prescriptivism. I’m a native English speaker and I’ve studied both Latin and several Romance Languages that are derived from it. I’ve studied law, language, history, sociology, logic, debate, math and various sciences, because those subjects all fascinate me to no end.

When to start a new paragraph and when to start a new “scene” I don't mean to be rude, but you answered something that wasn't asked. :) He was asking about the scene transitions, and you've offered him unsolicited advice regarding the wording of a description. He may not mind, but in general some writers get really irritated when you offer advice that was unasked for. |

Are contests an effective way to gauge the quality of your writing? In general, it's considered bad manners on Stack Exchange sites to post answers that are essentially the same as answers that are already there. If everyone did this, we'd have 20 duplicate answers on each question. If you want to talk about it head into the chat room where some of the regulars hang out. |

Are contests an effective way to gauge the quality of your writing? I guess you have better contests in LA, or I've never had exposure to any good ones that are here in Seattle. |

Creating metaphors in poetry I feel bad, like I pulled some kind of a bait and switch unintentionally by asking when I had an answer already, but, I felt that if I put my answer I wouldn't have gotten any ideas from anyone else about how to get unstuck or any other exercises to try, so I left the question unanswered. After seeing the downvotes and your answer, I decided that it was unlikely I was going to get any more ideas, so I posted my answer, but, since the question doesn't seem useful to others we should just delete it anyhow so it doesn't matter. Still, I wasn't trying to pull some kind of a bait and switch. :( |

Creating metaphors in poetry I could ask about how to develop a metaphor, but, I'm not interested in getting an answer to that so I would feel disingenuous doing so, so, I'd rather see it closed if it's not useful. I've voted to close and flagged. I don't have troubles coming up with metaphors, I was only wondering if there were tips to make it easier and faster. |
