Where are the best places to promote tech books? re: your last point, why do some people so resoundingly resent shameless plugs? |

Why are papers written in a two column format? yes, and that's probably why HTML5 is supposed to include the idea of wrapping columns |

What is the preferred way to type out ellipses? Spaces, at least one afterward... is much more attractive to me. Also, an ellipsis is not part of "high ASCII", but is in Unicode a U+2026. (Alt+0133 on Windows) |

What's a good way to backup your writing? Furthermore, are you saying that if someone was sufficiently motivated, they could hack into any given bank and transfer out some money? It's demonstrably not the case, despite there being lots of people motivated to that end. Good security isn't that hard to implement. Start by not using insecure emails. |

How do I better handle my nameless main character when trying to retain mystery? There's a story I like about the alot monster. |

What's a good way to backup your writing? You're misunderstanding and vastly underestimating the criminal element currently behind nasty malware such as bots. They may "randomly" find you (based on weakness), but exploit you they will. You need to remember that attacks are random at all. That's like saying they aren't intentionally malicious. Bots will most certainly use advanced techniques to offload any type of personal type of information. None of this sidebar is relevant when being secure is paramount. For a sysadmin, emailing around root passwords is a horrible idea. For a writer, so is emailing your manuscript. |

What's a good way to backup your writing? The point is this is not a secure solution. I stated the case about the risk as a word to the wise. |

Are there jobs that involve creative writing in the software industry? This could be applied to other industries as well, there's a lot of use for writing ancillary to trades or products be it machines like cars/boats/airplanes, entertainment like movies/music/travel, luxury services/travel/tourism and so forth. |

Are there jobs that involve creative writing in the software industry? Max Payne is an example of a great game which demonstrates a lot of creative elements, even though it was still technically an FPS. The art and storyline involved a lot of creativity beyond raw programming. |

Urban erotica and authors @neilfein; yes, this is a bad question. I'd -1 if I could. |

What should I do to promote my books? A way to do this might be to pay for some advertising (and a good landing page/website) either on a search engine or (better) on websites that should be of interest to your target audience. Time is money, so if you have time to write extra stuff, it's possible that it's even better invested in other ventures which then can fund the advertising. |

What should I do to promote my books? This sounds like a small scale of what big authors are doing when their on a book tour. To turn a phrase about - if it works for the gander... |

A Polish manual of style. Assuming he means The Elements of Style, the word "style" ought to defend his statement. @Tadeusz - you might have to consult a Polish-language resource (website). |

What's a good way to backup your writing? Webmail is a bad idea if you ask me. You could possibly encrypt it really well... But, you're talking about storing something that could well be your most valuable property in a location that is notoriously vulnerable. Either from a random attack or a bit of spyware on your own computers? Unless you have a good SLA (are paying for the service), it's a very bad idea. |

How do you come up with non-fiction story ideas? Yes - carry a notebook everywhere you go. After even one year of jotting down one thing per week, there's bound to be a dozen decent ideas and at least one great one. And, hopefully, you can jot down closer to two or three things a day. |

What's Essential In A Combat Scene? @monkey.. You don't take the time to savor much? There is of course such a thing as too much, but such a determination depends on the purpose of the piece. I could easily see an apt description of just such a fireworks event in a book, though with a different tone. In a pause. A lull like before a couple are going to be separated, the calm before a storm, or as a part of a contemplative/cerebral treatise. |
