Standardizing capitalization within a bibliography or footnotes when your sources have used different standards For Reference lists in our journals, we standardize all titles in cited works so that they follow our style guide. Our style happens to be, as Dan D. mentions, that we capitalize only the first word of all titles, unless the word is a proper name. So for your examples, we would list these titles as: The cat in the house. The dog in the barn. |

What is the proper way to use the pronoun “I” without too much repetition? For what it's worth, you could edit your sentence like this: I hope to be able to tell you on Friday or Monday. I'm trying to push this as fast as possible, but both bosses are still out of office. (You'd be down to two I pronouns.) |

Book cover conventions I would recommend consulting the book "Words Into Type" (still available on Amazon.com). Even though, as one reviewer put it, parts may seem "quaintly out of date," it is a thorough reference for structuring a book. I use my copy all of the time. |

Book cover conventions What type of book is it? If there is only one author and one editor, I think it would be more appropriate to acknowledge the editor on one of the front matter pages than on the cover. |

Do parentheses inhibit clarity? Does this answer the OP's questions? (Is there general consensus on the extent to rely on parentheses? Do parentheses generally make writing more or less clear?) |

What qualities should a good metaphor have? +1 for the...ahem...simile comment, for the reminder to beware of cliched metaphors, and for your list of fine examples. |

Should I put colons with second-level titles? Can you provide a little more context? Is Heading-2 in relation to Microsoft Word? |

Is it a bad idea to have all the action in the beginning and all the dialogue in the end? @alexchenco: There are a few other places where you have left out prepositions and used wording that a native speaker wouldn't. I would suggest asking a native speaker to read through your manuscript once you resolve your questions about the story structure. |

Is Patent text copyrighted? Have you read this, also? uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/mpep/documents/0600_608_01_v.htm II. INCLUSION OF COPYRIGHT OR MASK WORK NOTICE IN PATENTS -- I interpret this to mean that the patent applicant/holder has to take specific steps to have their text marked as copyrighted. Even so, I would guess some (or many) of the websites are not honoring the copyright. |
