What is the process for publishing academic papers? Your advice is good in general, but since Guy is in/from Lithuania, I'm not sure it's correct in the details. Since you don't give your location, justkt, I cannot say for sure, but I suspect you're probably not familiar with the Lithuanian academic system. Neither am I. (Wish people would give at least their country... hint hint, nudge nudge ;-)) |

Are already privately bound books a deterent for publishing houses? Uhm... "there", not "their". It slips into my writing from time to time too, that's how insidious those mistakes are; I blame, at least in part, reading this mistake (oh, and the other close cousins of it) so often one the intarweb. |

original story climaxes - rules / guidelines for this? "Learning" is not the same as "learning". I can learn without delving into the theory (much less following it slavishly, even if only for a time). Nowhere do I say you don't (have to) learn. Just how you learn your craft, that's where people differ. As a musician, and no different as a writer, I (I certainly) learn best from example: read, read, read... and think about what you've read. As a musician: listen, listen, listen, and think about what you've heard. Same goes, I'm sure, for all other arts: I at least learn best by "osmosis". |

original story climaxes - rules / guidelines for this? @One disagree. Strongly. Why should have have followed the rules before breaking them? I see this stated everywhere (in music: first learn to play (copy) existing songs before you write your own). But I don't see a reason given why this has to be so. Understand the rules, be aware of them... maybe. |

How much should I describe things or persons, that are not important for the story? This is another rule that shouldn't be followed slavishly. Chekhov's Gun is a good thing to know... and then put in one that doesn't play a role in the story at all. Like a red herring. Describe it in soooo much detail. And then... Except in the next book, it turns out it should have played a role, and because it didn't, all hell breaks lose. Hah, so there. Of course, we are culturally conditioned to expect the gun to be one of Chekhov's. So we tend to be disappointed if it isn't one. |

Should I translate myself my writings into english to get a bigger audience? One more thing to add to the OA: pro translators are, well, pros... they do that a lot faster than you can (if you're not trained/experienced). One reason for that is that they usually get (under)paid per page, so the faster they do it, the better the rate per hour. ;-P |

What are some examples of modern original plots? @Raskolnikov poetry is just a stylistic excercise? That's sounds pretty cynical to me, and wrong too. For some poets, in some subgenres of poetry, it certainly is (I think). But in general? What about comic poetry? Or are things that rhyme not poetry? |

What are some examples of modern original plots? too bad I can't stuff this ballot, or I'd upvote multiple times. Reminds me of analyzing (and of course, over-analyzing) things in school, poetry for example. Reminds me of that A&R guy saying that he went to so many concerts a year and heard so many bands that he couldn't hear anything original anymore, all he heard was "they sound like A with a little bit of B and the singer sounds like C". Where's the fun, and the joy in that? I (want to, heh) write because it's fun, and want my (eventual) readers to have fun reading it. |

How can a specific (current) event be made timeless? You last bracketed remark made me think... on here, most questions related to writing (and not to publishing) are "subjective" in the sense that there's no cookie cutter solution for it anyway. I think almost all of my answers contain a "it depends" in one form or another. Because... it depends. |
