comment For Fantasy Stories, Should You Include a Map At the Beginning of the Book?
+1 for "tedious explanation" Another +1 (if I could) for "Tolkien Did It First". "Someone famous did it too" is not a good reason to do something, whatever this something is.

Carefully? Why not put some "Here be dragons" in it? Works every time :D

Ouchies. Maybe a writer could explain eloquently enough... but I'd be bored to death by it (something I experienced with LOTR). And remember: a picture's worth a thousand words ;-) (Or: "Show, don't tell" :D)

comment How to name the characters of your story?
Good advice on the "someone you know lend a trait to your chars". JK Rowling for example has stated on multiple occasions that many of the characters in HP were inspired (that is a great word to know the meaning of for any writer ;-)) by real-life friends and acquaintances of hers.

comment Do I need to register my work to retain copyright?
+1 for the "If you don't trust a publisher" bit. And copyright works pretty much the same here in Germany (or the EU in general I think, due to the Berne Convention)

comment How much planning should go on before beginning writing?
+1 for... well, damn, for the first two paras, but you would have gotten a +1 for mentioning Howard Tayler's gang anyway ;-)

"clearly know how to end it"... and then be surprised when your characters force a very different ending ;-)

Rules only change when they get broken often enough.

Example comes readily to mind: John Grisham's first novel was "A Time to Kill". It wasn't his first published novel, though, to me, it's his best.
