Just some guy having too many accounts on too many sites (and most of those I can't even remember ;-)

comment Where can I find sales numbers for books?
In case your wondering: yes, I'm pretty much a cynic when it comes to business.

Another factor is: if authors did know actual real figures, they may be in a better bargaining position. Keeping them (that is, us) in the dark is "good for business". Oh, and it's also a good thing (for them) to keep the numbers (the actual numbers) from the better-selling authors. It's surprizing (if you believe in honesty) how many well-known authors had to sue and/or do an audit on the sales to get at the real figures (accompanied by sometimes hefty "late" royalty payments)

Reason? Simple: greed. Okay, "wanting money". Of course, there are costs involved in compiling a report (or Nielsen's figures) But how high are those costs? We don't know, and they're not telling.

comment Is where I live going to have a positive/negative effect on getting a novel published?
Improving your writing only increases your chances for getting published, of course, it's not a guarantee.

comment Dashes vs. Commas vs. parentheses?
@RobertCartaino: isn't it a style question, and thus on-topic? Really not sure it's off-topic.

comment How does one go about publishing erotica, and how far is too far?
You don't tell us where you want to publish it. That is, where in the physical world do you live? (No, we don't need a street address, a country or state would suffice.)

comment As a non-native English speaker, Is it better to get translated or get copyedited for long texts?
And then read the result, checking if it does say what you wanted to say. As you said, translations are often done quite poorly (translators are paid pretty badly), so it's good to check. Which may mean having to put appropriate stipulations into the (eventual) contract with a publisher.

comment A Polish manual of style.
@QuickerSnarkerBacker: I like Tadeusz's question, because it's a nice test (if you will) for writers.SE being non-English-only (or is it? Thought it wasn't (supposed to be))

@Ralph Grammar certainly does change. Somewhat glacially, mayhap, but it can and does. Just had to be said.

comment Getting Inside Someone Else's Head
That's (if you can do it) good advice. Look at the biography of successful writers, and you'll often find they worked any number of odd (sometimes really odd) jobs. While they waiting for their big break, that is.

comment What is the proper way to write time in a manuscript?
"whatever flows naturally" for that character, of course. But I guess that was implied ;-) And my clock on the Windows desktop reads "17:07" right now (yup, not the land of AM/PM; This! Is! Germany! ;-))

@JohnSmithers uhm, I think you mean "advice" ;-)

@neilfein: Haven't read C&SA either, but I've liked to do so for a long time.

Nice pseudonym, by the way. And if "Lauren Ipsum" is your actual name, then of course you have to be(come) a writer (and your parents had humor). But unlikely. :D

Except if you want to do that. Like, if you try winning the Bulwer-Lytton (Bad) Fiction Contest. ;-) Seriously, though, if you want to do that, do it. But do it in style. Honestly, I like the story snippet. ;-P

My main problem was that you linked to the "about" page... took me a bit til I noticed that. ;-)

Yeah, I found that out when I checked the site; have to try it out, although I have no idea how. Maybe blocked by NoScript...
