Do publishers really need to translate between UK and US English? Here's a list of differences between American and British English. Some my favorites (many are vulgar slang): fag: Br: cigarette, US: homosexual; fanny: Br: women's genitals, US: buttocks; pissed: Br: drunk, US: angry. I think these differences (and many others) would be confusing to Americans. |

Should cliffhangers be used in every chapter? I agree that having too many cliffhangers in a first person story would get tiring and seem contrived. They work best for me in third-person stories where the chapters alternate between characters, so the cliffhanger at the end of one chapter doesn't get resolved until at least two chapters later, which tends to make me want to get through the next chapter (with a different character, whom I may not care as much about) just to see what happens to the first character later on. |

Do parentheses inhibit clarity? +1 for "you should be able to lift out what is inside a set of parentheses and still have a grammatical, understandable sentence left behind." |

How should I use phrases such as “uh huh”? I hadn't thought of huh as indication agreement, only confusion. I like the idea of including the phrase along with the addition of body language. That really clears up any ambiguity. Also agree they shouldn't be overused. |

How should I use phrases such as “uh huh”? Thanks for the edit. As I mentioned in my original post, two people in english.SE thought the question belonged here. As a writer, I am mostly interested in whether they are appropriate for main-line adult fictional writing, or maybe young adult. |
