Conlang question If you're into this sort of thing, you might be interested to know that the Area51 proposal for Planned & Constructed Languages, where this sort of question would also be on topic, is now in the commitment phase. If you haven't already, please consider committing to that proposal. |

How can I effectively invent a language? Potential confusion: referring to home planet as “Earth” @NickBedford I know this post was a while ago, and I don't know how much your story has changed - but you may have been misinformed about the Latin word "pexus". It doesn't mean "new" as such; it means woolly, nappy, fuzzy, which can mean new in reference to shoes, fabric, hair, and the like. It doesn't generally mean "new". To be sure, you may know this and have a good reason for choosing it nonetheless. |

Do most novels not get published? Unfortunately neither of those links works any more. As a matter of fact the whole kingsfieldpublications.co.uk site seems to have gone belly-up. |

Is there a special software for writers? As you can tell from all the answers, there's a lot of software out there, and at least as many opinions. No one software is the "ideal", "right", or "best" software. It depends on what you're trying to write, what your hardware/software platform is, what your preferences are.... It's quite a personal choice! |

What is the difference between writing in the first and the third person? I just came across this answer, and I must say your argument is quite convincing. Watson and Holmes immediately come to mind. |

Does this paragraph make you want to keep reading? I agree about the oddness of "ever" in the first line. Either Can you remember the last toy you ever bought? or Can you remember the last toy you ever bought? would sound more natural to me. |

Will science fiction as a genre ever go the way of the western? Yes, that's a valid point about fantasy - what's more, the line between fantasy and sci-fi is very fuzzy indeed! |

I suck at plots. Is there a way to sort of train oneself to think of creative plots, specifically in scifi? Just a nit - you spelled "pantser" wrong. I wouldn't even bother telling you but SE won't let me make a 2-letter edit. |
