comment Should I use ellipses or em dashes to denote pauses in speech?
I'm no grammarian, but it would make more sense to me if the pause is placed before the sentences in question rather than in the middle: I flipped open its latch and peered inside... A gold tooth? (same with the dash - whichever works batter.)

comment How to release a heavy revision to a series without upsetting readers?
@what, if nothing else changed, that would be correct, but what if the author actually learned something in the interval between editions and now sees a much clearer way to proceed even though the details may not have changed? In college, I took a number of "bad" classes because they were taught by grad students with no real experience using the subject in the real world or in teaching. If one of them wrote a book ...

comment In Flare, how can we make atomic change groups in review?
I know nothing about your specific issues, but maybe it's time to consider another tool. Just as one example, some people use git to manage documents (other than programs), and it allows all sorts of flexibility for handling revisions. I'm sure there are other tools as well. It also might be possible to combine more than one tool - do fine grain in git and then put the changes back into flare as one change, etc.

comment Why one sentence per paragraph in these news articles?
Aside from all the very good answers below, people's attention spans are really short these days. Sometimes one sentence is all they can handle in one bite.

comment Is it okay to end a novel with a cliffhanger?
Agreeing with the answers: each book should stand on its own as valid complete (satisfying) experience for the reader. Then, if there's more, great.

comment Is it possible for an author's first book to be popular?
Sometimes an author will self-publish a small run and later get picked up by a major publisher. If it's good, it can succeed - especially today with the Internet to spread the news for free.

comment What should take precedence? Rhythm or clarity?
It's kind of the wrong question. Whatever you write has to "work" for the reader. They have to understand what you're telling them and they have to feel what it means. How that gets accomplished will vary for every situation. There is no "right" answer. Clarity addresses the first issue. Rhythm, word choice, sentence structure, and lots of other things affect the second one.

comment What should take precedence? Rhythm or clarity?
Nit picking: "Two ridges stood on both sides" - seems to say 2 on the left and 2 on the right. If you leave out the "Two", it works - "Ridges stood on either side". Or "between two ridges, a river flowed".

comment Story-telling to improve writing skills?
Where I live, there have been story telling workshops and a group that met regularly for story tellers. Maybe there's something near you. The presentation form is sufficiently different than writing that the actual technical details may not transfer well, but the plots and characters and ideas will. Plus you can see immediately if you're losing the group's attention or if they react to something the way you'd like them to.

comment Is it permissible to write a short story with little or no dialogue?
If you wrote a story just about an animal (and didn't anthropormorphize it), dialog would be impossible. That wouldn't affect the quality of the story at all.

comment Good idea to describe the heist place before the heist begins?
As part of identifying with the protagonists, you can follow their thoughts/emotions as they plan the heist and then their discoveries/impressions as it actually goes down. This is another way of looking at the same thing this answer addresses. What does it mean to the characters? How does it affect them?

comment How should I execute this idea?
Continued... Sometimes a major event can trigger a major internal change - like getting caught criminally hacking, being betrayed, or some other trauma. In any case, it would be much better for the reader to figure it out by seeing the effects of the changes/realizations rather than having them labelled as such by the author or by the protagonist.

Enlightenment with a "small e" ;) or even the real deal is demonstrated by actions (show, don't tell). The actions can also be realizations which are part of the story. What usually happens to people is that a large number of relatively small insights add up inconspicuously and at some point a sort of critical mass is reached where the person's overall outlook or actions change enough so that they notice that they have grown/changed. Often, it takes someone else to notice the changes because gradual change can seem like nothing is happening to the person changing....

comment How should I execute this idea?
Enlightenment as currently used covers a lot more than "true" enlightenment. Why is he/she "hacking"? Writing about that could lead to a re-evaluation of goals. Was it worth it? Was it done in service of the "right" cause? Did all that "hacking" really change who they are? Etc. Maybe "insight" would be better than "enlightenment". Or maybe they could merge with a machine, etc. to attain some sort of techno-enlightenment, if you can find a way to make it believable and not B-movie material.
