comment Is it unusual to use product placement within a fictional novel, and what are the legalities around this?
You can always add a paragraph along with the copyright, publishers' details etc. that says something along the lines of "this is a work of fiction. any similarities with real persons, events or corporations are unintended and coincidental."

comment How to convey that the POV character *does not understand* what's said in dialogue?
@CLockeWork You make a good point, and one seemingly well in line with both my second-to-last paragraph in the question and Dale's answer (which I upvoted, but I found Lauren's answer with some examples more helpful which is why I chose to accept it over Dale's.

comment Really Stuck: Writing Dialogue
Wow, a first novel spanning "thousands of pages"? Even if it's only raw material, I still think that's a lot. I hope you're planning to break it up into multiple books... :)

comment Is Sherlock Holmes public domain for use in a story?
If you want to be reasonably certain, you should consult with a lawyer specializing in copyright law.

comment permission to use emails from famous deceased person
Are you reprinting the e-mails verbatim and in full, or only a few select fragments (like a few sentences to illustrate your point)?

comment Citing in a Magazine Article
What is your target audience? It's a huge difference writing e.g. academic articles and news articles which cite sources which want to remain anonymous.

comment Does the country matter in a story if it is set in a real one?
Do you even need to specify the country at all? Depending on the story, you might not need to name places in the first place.

comment where would be a good place to find writers for my staff?
Also, as the question is written, it reads to me more like a poll or list question than one that can be answered with a single authoritative answer, and thus would seem to be at risk of closing as "not constructive". Could you perhaps re-word it so that it can be more definitively answered? See What topics can I ask about here? in the Writers.SE help center.

"Staff" usually implies remuneration, but you also say "free work". Which is it?
