comment Time management for part-time writing
Related to this, even if you don't write daily, still schedule time to write. I also have a full-time job and small children. I don't write during the week except sporadically at lunch time, but I have from 11-1 on Saturdays that is my scheduled writing time.

comment Do words like “start”, “realize”, and “decide” add ambiguity to actions?
I just happened upon this blog article today, and thought it was quite a coincidence! You might find it interesting.

comment How to engage a child audience when my characters have no language?
I didn't mean to suggest I thought the material was appropriate for that age range, but rather that all of the speech in that book is sign language and grunts, so you might use it as a guide for how to accomplish what you are trying to do.

Have you ever read Clan of the Cave Bear?

Why are you including them in your book? What's their purpose in that work?

comment Should I create my own ConLang for my story?
How much time do you have/want to devote to constructing a language? Will you use it in other stories or just for this one? How much dialogue do you expect to have in your conlang? Will it be reflected in the surrounding culture (e.g., names of towns, terrain, and people, slang terms for things)?

comment Resource for someone better at editing than writing
Depends on how annoying you are going to be about your artistic vision. You should pop into writer's chat in The Overlook chat room tomorrow; you can propose the writing topic.

comment How to stay motivated while writing a story, after the initial burst of enthusiasm?
It would be nice if writing were all about inspiration, but in reality, the most successful writers are the ones who approach writing like it is work. Because it is. Hopefully satisfying work, labor of love kind of stuff, but in the end, it is still just work.

Yes! A good font is surprisingly helpful. It makes you feel professional and invested (or something), like "this is what a real writer's writing looks like, and this is my writing, therefore I must be a real writer!"

comment How to stay motivated while rewriting?
If you love writing and hate re-writing, then maybe writing is all you need to feel fulfilled, so don't worry about revising. If you love writing and want to share your writing with readers, you'll need to think about what your trying to share through your stories. When you get into the habit of thinking about what you're trying to say to someone else, I think you'll find that revising will come more naturally to you.

comment How to stay motivated while rewriting?
@Lauren I think that's a self-correcting problem. If OP isn't motivated to re-write, then not having any readers might increase his motivation. On the other hand, if he's not concerned with having readers, then what's the point of re-writing anyway? Seems logical to me.

comment Show don't tell advice
Cold air whistled through the crack in the windowpane. The sudden draft made the fire flare in the fireplace while shadows stretched their ghastly fingers up the wall. Which is to say, you can do a lot with ambiance.

comment Is the word “becoming” being used correctly in the following metaphor?
I think maybe if it's slanted to "what are the different implications of these two alternatives" and you are more specific about what you are trying to convey, it might be on-topic over at EL&U.

comment Is replacing “this” with “a” allowed in fiction?
Not just Southern US. I'm a Yankee and I'd use it. It wouldn't be considered ignorant-sounding where I come from.

I think it's fine, much like using some in the same context. It gives the story a conversational feel.

comment List of wars someone could be a part of, if they were born a certain date
Out of curiosity, have you tried googling "wars between 1990 and 2014" (1990 being the age your character would have been 18)? There's a whole book on that very specific topic called *War in the Modern World, 1990-2014 not to mention that you can find lists of wars by date on Wikipedia. Also, tours of duty are going to depend largely on the kind of tour and the branch of service, as well as the country.

Is the detective supposed to actually be saying those things? If so, try using dialogues tags.

comment Should I write my novel?
I have a day job and a contract to fulfill, two children (4 and 6), and an old farmhouse that needs a woodstove installed, a wall built, and wood laid in before winter. I'm doing NaNoWriMo right now. It doesn't seem like much time, but if you love it, keep doing it, even if it's only fifteen minutes a day before you collapse in a heap. Also, write it all first, then review it; keeps you from getting stuck.
