My understanding is most people need more than 1 draft. scottberkun.com/blog/2011/even-jefferson-had-second-drafts

comment How often do writers develop characters before plot, and why?
Agree with "plenty of other great ways to construct stories". Literary writers and critics have led us to believe characters are everything, but unless you are writing a Literary novel and hope to win the Booker prize, characters are just one dimension in what makes an interesting story.

comment How does the 10,000 hour rule apply to writing?
While Gladwell popularised the concept, a better explanation is in the book "Talent Is Overrated" by Geoff Colvin. Colvin uses scientific studies to show that what passes for "talent" is merely focussed practice. But Colvin says it has to be directed practice that works on aspects of your weakness, not general practice. So he gives the example of NBA stars who spend 10-12 hours continuously throwing the ball in the hoop from one fixed location, till they can do so with their eyes closed. Next day they move to another location and start again.

comment How do I write a synopsis?
How about this: "A young man must make a dangerous journey across the land to destroy a magical ring, if we wants to stop an evil wizard from destroying all he holds dear." Just one sentence :)

comment What genre is a book in an imaginary world but no other fantasy element?
Agree with @Standback here. Whats out there today, maybe accepted science in the future. When Gibson wrote Neuoromancer, there was no such thing as cyber-space. So was he writing fantasy? If science fiction was only written with what is scientifically acceptable today, it would be very dull and boring, more like a textbook.
