@Standback, I asked the question because I had read far too many articles by "Professor" types who shouted loudly that if you want to be successful, spend a lot of time on character development. :) But as JSBangs answer below shows, this depends more on genre.

@Standback- I agree with your comments, including the ones you made to @One Monkeys reply. Maybe you are right, I dont need to spend too much time developing all the characters.

@Standback - its a statement Ive read in blogs, books, repeated far too many times to make an impression on me, though I cant remember any particular source. As for the question, it is as the title says: Are books that lay more stress on character development more successful than ones that lay stress on plot?

the zombies will ride mutant, super intelligent Unicorns, and fire laser guns at the hero. Hows that?

Nice answer Craig, you said everything I was going to say, but in more detail. Adding to what you said, everytime you read a WW2 novel, the Germans dont start talking in German do they? Most books use 1 or 2 German words, like Achtung, but then stick to English for everything else.

I agree with Indoril. I dont like it either when authors put quotes from foreign languages, and dont translate them. It makes me wonder if they are essential to the plot, should I use google translate, or just read on? Anyway, it is insulting.
