Why are papers written in a two column format? In typesetting there is actually a sweet spot between too short lines (eyes have to constantly jump lines) and too long lines (when jumping a line it's hard to figure out which line is the next one and not accidentally skip a line). The exact ideal is a function of the font-size as well as other properties of the font such as it's x-height and proportions. |

Should you use two spaces after a period, or just a single one? Yes, this is correct: it is not a matter of preference! Amen. |

Is discovery or outline writing connected to personality type (e.g. MBTI) @Jason There's already a flamewar about this exact topic elsewhere on this site. |

What are some ways to get to know your characters? @bev That's kind of what I've been saying. Quoting Furnham, 1995: "most popularly used measure in the consultancy and training world (the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) and one of the most heavily used measures in the academic research area on personality (the five factor NEO-PI)". It has it's uses... just not in science. Like 15 years ago, maybe. |

What are some ways to get to know your characters? @bev, @Philip It's been discredited mainly in the scientific community - still used in business and clinical psy. |

How to overcome the fact that I can't write? That sounds really interesting. Though I must admit I have no idea where to find a partner like that. |
