Should I start writing on paper first or start directly on the computer? Yes I'd forgotten that, a VCS can add all sorts of branching opportunities to digital writing. I'll add that one to the list. |

Fan Fiction: a crutch or a good start? @Ralph fixed, thanks. But even when modified, there is still a connection to the original source. If it can be modified enough "to be original", the author probably has enough skill to just create the original story directly. Attempting to move from fanfic to original story is a lot messier than creating an original story from scratch that draws inspiration from the source. |

Fan Fiction: a crutch or a good start? Although I don't mean to say that all sourcing from other material is bad. HedgeMage's answer contains examples of things that draw from other material without going into the "fanfic" territory. |

Fan Fiction: a crutch or a good start? "not based heavily" being the key phrase there. How heavily it's based in the original source is how far you've dug yourself into a hole. The deeper it is the harder it is to dig yourself out of it again. |

Organizing your Universe? I got halfway through typing a response before I remembered that people much smarter and more thorough than I have already explained how horrible Word files are: goldmark.org/netrants/no-word/attach.html and en.nothingisreal.com/wiki/… |

How do I overcome a lack of motivation to write at home? It sounds like a nice idea, but I have a feeling I'm my own worse enemy. If I try to intentionally isolate myself with a trip or cutting off internet, my superego will tear that reasoning to bits. I might try avoiding my PC and desk for a while though, just to get away from that particular rut. |
