Don't worry about "it's been done before." Your goal is to do it your way, and never mind what anyone else has done. Your theme (Lack of purpose => Apathy => Failure to adapt => Vicious cycle) is interesting, but I'm having some trouble connecting it to your précis. How does "too much freedom" equate to "lack of purpose"? I think linking it to ...

"Turn exposition into ammunition" is shorthand for a writing technique. A quick Google turns up this article: http://michellelipton.wordpress.com/2009/08/17/mckee-on-exposition/ Money quote: “Convert exposition to ammunition … when [the] story is thick with conflict, the characters need all the ammunition they can get. As a result, the writer has little ...

In the past, I have been required to write "impersonally" by omitting all personal pronouns, etc, which was considered the proper way to write academic research papers. That sounds like the writing style that you are being asked to use. I have found it useful to think of it as writing a series of instructions, but in the past tense. In this fashion, you ...

Exposition: "As all members of the scientific community know," Dr. Bigpipe said clenching his big pipe between his teeth. "The F'zargh of Multath V has a unique means of camouflage. It is able to assume the shape of small household items and then, surreptitiously worm its mind control tendrils into the basal ganglia and from there it's Goodnight Vienna!" ...

Depending on the context, you might wish to consider specifying which currency it is, eg The company spent $4.5 billion (USD) As there are many different dollars, and they all use the same $ symbol. If that is the only currency used within the paper then you could state that the currency is US dollars at the start rather than for every amount.

Given your paragraph description, I have to admit to being somewhat unconvinced along a few points. You set up a direct connection between the regime's oppressive control of its citizens and a lack of purpose, but I think you need to nuance that connection more closely. The currently much-analyzed phenomenon of the quarterlife crisis among middle and ...

To answer the question in your title: yes! The question that I don't see asked is how long is your essay supposed to be? Is there a word limitation or expectation? If so, then that will influence the length of your essay and help dictate how much you need in your outline. As for the outline itself, I believe you have a very good working start. I like the ...

The only technique I can really suggest is one of alliteration, which is essentially the repetition of the same sound due to certain syllables within words, which form a pattern or beat of sorts, imposing a shape on the lines. If you re-read the final line and place emphasis on the syllables, you notice "star-ted", "strick-en", and "sun-ny"; it seems the ...

I think that the "lack of purpose" is a welcome mindsed of our civilisation. (At least, thought mainstream is declaring it.) Those who feel an urge to be trumpeting out that "there is no purpose" do not seem to be apathetic. So I am afraid that your setup is a little bit unlikely. But I must admit that someone who is forced to accept the "no purpose" ...

Do the report as though you were merely observing others. Stick to the facts and keep your opinions out of it. Do the report as though are telling a story about someone else where you do not have a vested interest. Avoid talking about thoughts, feelings, emotions and try to write with out judgment. There is no easy way to depersonalize an event that ...

Without knowing the course material or the checklist, my impulse is to say that you should look for a theme, or something which most or all of the points have in common. What do they all relate to? What ties them all together? Failing that, group the bullets. Maybe three of them are about Freud, four of them about various methods of treating mental ...

I think part of the problem is that this poem seems devoid of meaningful content, although I certainly might be missing something. It seems like a bunch of phrases into which you've thrown the word "rocks", and then there is some guy you used to love in a different way. I don't think that any sort of imagery, no matter how seductive, will cure the failure ...

Drama is conflict, while exposition are facts. All stories have facts, but the facts themselves are not the storytelling. Sometimes I use this analogy. If storytelling is motion, facts are the brakes. Hit the brakes too often and the whole thing grinds to a halt. This creates one of the big dilemmas of storytelling. How many facts can safely be ...
