I like fantasy, but I am interested in writing a story that is somewhat different. I thought about writing from the perspective of the evil antagonist (think from Sauron's perspective). So my bad guy will be the protagonist and my good guys will be the antagonist. I want my main protagonist to be in general a bad guy. I don't like the idea of using the "but he thinks he is a good guy". I want my character to be petty, shallow, and selfish.
I am interested in this in large part because it has not been done.
Has anyone thought of a story like this? I probably wouldn't make it a huge epic story since I do not have the experience to write a story like that. I think a smaller scope tighter book would work better for a new author.
I have some other dark fantasy ideas as well. Another one would be a sort of fallen angel story. You have a generally likeable good guy character who is placed in an impossible situation. He is fighting against a truly horrible and evil opponent. He starts off by trying to fight a moral war and not stoop to the level of his opponents. Slowly over time, he falls from grace since his good guy tactics do not work. In the end he becomes as brutal or worse than his opponents. This is interesting to me, since it is the opposite of alot of fantasy stories. The trick is he does not turn into the evil guy who wants to take over the world. He still wants to defeat him, but in the end he will use what means are necessary to do it.
Just curious about people's opinions and pitfalls of this type of story. I think alot of people would hate them because most of us are drawn to likeable characters. I would need to find away to make them likeable.
